We wanted to give you a glimpse into some of the volunteers that make Help-Portrait great. Here’s a photographer who works with Help-Portrait in Yuma, AZ.
Name: Chriselda Turcios (website)
Location: currently in Yuma, Az. Recently moved from San Diego after living there for 5 years
Occupation: mother of 3 girls, Marine wife, photographer
Family Stats: I have 3 daughters ages 6, 5, and 5 months old. My husband has in been in the Marines 12 years.
How did you get involved with Help-Portrait? A guest speaker by the name of Stewart Allman came to one my classes (where I briefly studied at UCSD) and asked if anyone would like to help other people & get involved with help-portrait. I decided to volunteer and have been involved ever since. I love it.
What do you like best about it? What I like best about Help-Portrait is being one on one with other people, sometimes without even knowing it, you give them something much more than a portrait. It’s hard to imagine families without a family portrait and it’s a great feeling when you see someone smile over a picture. I read somewhere that photography is not a necessity, it’s a luxury. And, if I have the luxury of photography, then why not share it with others who don’t.
What planning tip would you offer? A planning tip I would offer is not to be intimidated by asking people or companies for help. There are so many people who are willing to help, all you have to do is ask.The worst that could happen is them saying no. In 2010, I asked friends, neighbors and people I didnt know to help, by donating gently used stuffed toys, and I received over 100.
What are you most looking forward to this year? I’m looking forward to starting the movement in Yuma, AZ and most of all, getting my husband’s fellow Marines involved.
